Role of the Language Services Department

The role of the Language Services Department in the Government services delivery is to ensure all pieces of information and documents that the Government is providing to its people are in the three official languages, namely Bislama, English and French.

In the past years, since its establishment, the LSD has focused mainly on translation, which has become the core function of the Department. Besides, quite a number of terminology was gathered, and few interpretation and language awareness services were provided. However, these latest services have drastically decreased over the years.

Consequently, since the Department is to provide “language services” to the nation, it has amended its organizational structure, approved in 2018, to improve its traditional services (translation, and little interpretation and language awareness), as well as to cater for more language services such as revision, electronic terminology bank and Language Council coordination.

The function of the LSD is therefore divided into six areas as follows:

  • translation;
  • interpretation;
  • revision
  • terminology;
  • awareness and promotion of official and vernacular languages;
  • Language Council coordination.
